Bibliography
This book presents a pictorial documentary of the years 1955-1995 on New Zealand railways; a period that coincides with the end of one era, the whole of a second and now the beginning of a third.
In 1955 most people who made long distance journeys travelled on a train that was operated by a government department and was typically hauled by a steam locomotive.
By 1975 most people preferred to travel by car or aircraft, passenger trains were much fewer in number and were hauled by diesels. The railways were, however, still run by a government department with a staff of over 20,000 and still had a virtual monopoly on long distance overland freight traffic.
In 1995 the railways are run by a private investor-owned company with an employee payroll one quarter that two decades ago and which has to compete for freight traffic in a fully deregulated environment.
In his text, Tony Hurst traces the developments of motive power, changes in organisational structure, the changing role of the railways and their public face over four decades. More than 270 superb photographs in full colour vividly recall to life the way things were on the rails not so very long ago.
