The original Far Wheels was published in London during 1959. Railway Age in New York bought a few copies from the British publisher for sale in the United States. While the book received good reviews on both sides of the Atlantic, the sales were not very great because interest in overseas railways had neither developed in England nor in the United States. This interest started first in Great Britain when their steam vanished which forced the enthusiasts to travel beyond the borders of the United Kingdom to see a real live steam locomotive in service. Today the British enthusiasts are willing to travel halfway around the world to see the remnants of the world's steam locomotives.
