INTRODUCTION
The Great Western Railway Company (GWR) was a grand patriarchal institution that upheld the values of its time. It worked on a hierarchical model. It believed that there was a rank and place for everybody and that everybody should know that place. The world of railways was a masculine world, a world of brain and brawn, of science and technology. It was a place of daring and danger. It was not a place for `the fair sex' as the GWR liked to refer to women. The GWR wholeheartedly supported The Railway Sheet and Official Gazette when it stated: `The first aim of women's existence is marriage, that accomplished, the next is ordering her home.' Such a stance placed the GWR in something of a dilemma which led to a lifelong problematical relationship with its female employees.
