I-About Mr. Brown's $500
THE most casual observer of the transportation scene must quickly conclude that the railroads are not hauling a lot of traffic which ordinary common sense would indicate they ought to be hauling; and that, at the same time, they are hauling a lot of traffic which, common sense again suggests, could be moved more economically in some other way. For example, it seems obvious that some arbitrary interference with natural economic processes must be going on when trucks from the Pacific Coast are seen in the Mid-West and even along the Atlantic seaboard. Such evidence is puzzling and challenging, when it is realized that transcontinental trains in daily operation could probably take on all this ultralong-haul truck tonnage with only an infinitesimal increase in railroad operating expense. Again, when a local passenger train is seen with no more passengers in it than the crew that mans the train, and no more than an automobile would carry, the inquisitive observer must wonder whether the "inherent advantages" of motor vehicle transportation are being realized any better than those of the railways are.
It is as if railroad spikes were being used to do the work of safety pins, and vice versa.
