It was due to the friendliness of the company and its employees that resulted in the railroad being known as \"The Friendly Service Route.\" As a teenager, I was able to be found spending an evening or weekend at the Warren (OH) passenger station, visiting the Youngstown dispatching office, riding the head-end of passenger trains between Meadville and Kent or Youngstown and Cleveland, as well as visiting and observing the tower operations at various locations. All of this was unsanctioned, of course, but the Erie Lackawanna officials, from the Trainmaster and Road Fore- man up to the Superintendent looked the other way, for the most part. The company promoted interest in their operations, especially to persons that may become future employees.
