FOREWORD
The attraction toward the Erie Lackawanna (the hyphen disappeared in 1963) Railroad (changed to Railway in 1968) was not a result of the attractiveness of the company's paint scheme or its financial condition. It was due to the friendliness of the company and its employees that resulted in the railroad being known as "The Friendly Service Route." As a teenager, I was able to be found spending an evening or weekend at the Warren (OH) passenger station, visiting the Youngstown dispatching office, riding the head-end of passenger trains between Meadville and Kent or Youngstown and Cleveland, as well as visiting and observing the tower operations at various locations. All of this was unsanctioned, of course, but the Erie Lackawanna officials, from the Trainmaster and Road Fore- man up to the Superintendent looked the other way, for the most part. The company promoted interest in their operations, especially to persons that may become future employees. I'd been told many times; "you can't ride the locomotives without official permission in writing, you are not allowed up here, now sit over there and hang on so you don't get hurt." Other comments such as "If you are going to continue to ride the passenger engines, you should become an employee when you are old enough." A famous quote of Youngstown-Cleveland passenger engineer George Lazor was "Kid, you can't ride up here with us, it's not permitted, now sit down-and keep you head down at Aurora so no one sees you." That was the Erie Lackawanna that I knew when I hired out on June 1, 1965 and the Erie Lackawanna that I knew up until 2359 hrs (EL used a 24-hour clock) March 31, 1976. Thank you for joining us as we take a numerical look at the motive power of The Friendly Service Route.
