The Era Of Streetcars In Winnipeg 1881 - 1955 By Herbert Blake Soft Cover 1971 Approx 80 pages
PREFACE
Fifteen years have now passed since the 19th day of September, 1955 when the running of streetcars ceased on Winnipeg streets. This is on attempt to record and preserve for posterity the appearance that these cars had when developed and turned out for public use.
Very little change took place in the design of the horse drown car. A simple sturdy frame with a suitable coach body mounted upon it; usually not longer than sixteen to eighteen feet in length; it seated twenty passengers and could, upon occasion, accommodate eight more. Locally this vehicle was replaced within ten years by the first electric car.
The first electric car, in the established pattern produced by the several manufacturers engaged in this work, provided over the next few years, with minor changes, a picturesque assortment. Over the ensuing years, further designs and modifications produced the variety of electric cars found in local usage permitting this pictorial assemblage of -The Era of Streetcars'' in Winnipeg: 1881 to 1955.
