INTRODUCTION
The focus of this book is on the steam locomotive classes of the Delaware & Hudson that were in common operation during the late 1930s and 1940s. During this time, the D&H went from a coal hauler to a bridge carrier where train speeds were important for connections with other railroads. By 1950, 233 steam locomotives remained on the roster, 182 in freight service, twenty-six in passenger service and twenty-five in switching operations. By 1953, diesel switchers and road switchers had replaced all active steam power.
For passenger power, the D&H acquired ten class P Pacific locomotives, #600-609 (page 19), in 1914 from Alco. During the 1920s, they were rebuilt looking very British with capped stacks, recessed headlights and smoke-lifters after D&H President L. F. Loree made a trip to Europe after World War I. Three more Class P-1 Pacifies, #651-653, (page 23) were built between 1929 and 1931, with the clean lines and other features that had been adapted on the earlier Class P Pacifies. In addition to the new Pacifies, the D&H also rebuilt, between 1925 and 1931, several D-3 class 4-6-0s into single-cab modernized Ten-Wheelers (page 16) with numbers in the 500 series. Not only did some of the Ten-Wheelers get rebuilt, but also a few 4-4-0s. A group of double-cab Class G-5 4-4-0s built in 1903 and 1904 were rebuilt to single-cab modernized American-type locomotives during the 1920s (page 14). Some double-cab locomotives were rebuilt during the 1920s and 1930s to single-cab locomotives for safety reasons.
