INTRODUCTION
Electro-Motive Corporation (EMC) demonstratorA-B-B-A set of FT units operated over the Boston & Maine during September 1940 on Boston to Portland, ME, Boston to Mechanicville, NY and Boston to White River J unction, VT runs. By 1941, EMC became EMD (Electro-Motive Division of General Motors). The FT units were 1350hp diesel cab units powered by a 16-cylinder 567 diesel engine. At that time the B&M owned six SW 1 600hp EMC/EM D switchers and two NW2 1000hp switchers (all 567 powered) when the United States entered World War II. Traffic levels were increasing, and the road had been impressed with the FT demonstration. Finally, with the approval of the War Production Board, the B&M placed an order for A-B-B-A sets of EMD FT units. With limited production and a backlog of orders at La Grange, IL, EMD produced six A-units and six B-units for the B&M in 1943. A-units #4200A-4205A and B-units #4200B-4205B were delivered between September and December 1943. The next part of that order, #4206A-4207A and #4206B-4207B, did not arrive until February 1944. B&M's second delivery for FT units, #4208A-4223A and #4208B-4223B, followed quickly in October and November 1944.
To modernize its passenger operations, the B&M wanted diesel passenger units from EMD, but the War Production Board did not give General Motors the approval to resume production of diesel passenger locomotives until late 1944. EMD upgraded its 2000hp passenger cab unit to a model E7, and as soon as materials were available started limited production in early 1945. B&M's order for sixteen units, #3800-3815, was delivered between September 1945 and June 1946. With material shortages and slow production, EMD allocated units to various railroads over a period of time as production ramped up.
