Introduction
Attempting to produce a work on the current status of North American railroads is very much like trying to hit a moving target. The past quarter century has been one of great change for railways, both in Canada and the United States. The years in which this volume was in preparation were particularly turbulent. For example, as press time approached, the sale of Conrail to the Norfolk Southern Corporation had been approved by the Interstate Commerce Commission but not yet completed. This sale, if finalized, will make the Norfolk Southern system the largest in the country, displacing the CSX Corporation lines. The proposed merger of the Southern Pacific and the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe was still being held up by litigation. Every effort has been made, right up to press, to make the information in this volume as up-to-date as possible.
Information on the number of freight cars, passenger cars, locomotives and route mileage is provided in the entries on individual railroads. However, a railroad's complement of locomotives and rolling stock changes almost daily, so these figures can be regarded only as approximations. All extant Class I United States railroads, as well as major Canadian railways are included. A number of Class II railroads, which in the judgment of the author, are of particular interest, arc also discussed. Some lines that are no longer in existence but which arc of historical significance are included.
Individually named trains are discussed in the entry on Passenger Trains, The Great Ones, and not in separate entries. Items printed in small capital letters are cross references and indicate that the topic is discussed in a separate alphabetical entry.
Encyclopedia of North American Railroads is a comprehensive, detailed coverage of North American railroads from the fast horse-drawn lines to the present time. This fascinating encyclopedia presents the world of railroading in entries arranged alphabetically. Special sections deal with broad concepts such as the decline of American railroads and the complicated and shady dealings of the Robber Baron era.
Rich in detail, this book presents information about the equipment, lines, personalities, railroad companies, political events and financial dealings of the American and Canadian railroads. Included are well-known personalities such as Cornelius Vanderbilt, Matthias Baldwin, Jay Gould and Jim Fisk, as well as lesser-known but important people such as Ross Winans and Phineas Davis
Among the locomotives to be included are, early ones such as the Tom Thumb, De Witt
Clinton Best Friend of Charleston and later ones such as Big Eby and today's sophisticated electric, diesels and turbos. illustrated with photographs, drawings and maps, this fascinating encyclopedia is a valuable, information-rich resource, a volume sure to become a treasure for all who appreciate the railroads of North America.
