There was no liberal education, you might say, in North America's railroad industry for so many years compressed into one big reference book designed to be informative, comprehensive, readable, and accurate enough to settle arguments. I wrote this book to meet a need long felt by myself as an editor-writer, by railroaders, hobbyists, authors, historians, researchers, fellow editors, librarians, lecturers, and radio and TV personnel. The authors, compilers, and editors decide what is to be put in or left out. My own judgment was sharpened by my 36 years as the editor of Railroad Magazine, a nationally circulated monthly, and by writing during that time hundreds of articles for Railroad and other periodicals as well as several books.
