INTRODUCTION:
Welcome to the Encyclopedia of B&O Cabooses, volume I. This first volume covers the modern pool cabooses of the B&O along with the single transfer-type caboose converted from a box car in 1976. Events that happened during this modern era also are included such as the class C-26 Safety Slogan cabooses, Careful Car Handling cabooses, the B&O's single solar caboose and the Raceland Car Shops. There is also a chapter on general caboose history that occurred during this modern pool caboose era. A color section documents paint color application, a topic certainly of interest to every modeler. We also
have included a chapter covering caboose trucks and a section detailing and defining the various markings found on the newer cabooses, some of which can be confusing to fans. There is a lot of information in this volume which you cannot find in any other publication.
What's in a name? Why do we call this series the "Encyclopedia" of B&O cabooses? We chose that name to highlight the fact that this book provides extensive coverage to B&O cabooses, much more than you can find anywhere else. Our goal is to try and answer every possible question one might ask.
Hopefully we answer questions that readers have not even thought of yet! No one else has conducted the extensive research that we have over the past, almost 50, years, and we provide the results herein.
Records, Research and Rosters? Yes you will find a chapter on that topic in this book. We don't skimp on the research and behind-the-scenes stories. We could produce a book with one or two photos of each car type and a short paragraph about them but we think B&O history students deserve more than an elementary look at the interesting history of B&O cabooses. How did we assemble this information and the detailed rosters that are included? It was not easy. There is no "master" B&O caboose record. Various departments kept the records that were necessary to the scope of their particular department. Transportation was interested in what was out there and where it was; property accounting was interested in keeping an accurate count of quantities and betterments which might change the value of the assets; mechanical was interested in controlling modifications, designs, and painting and lettering schemes; etc. We made systematic inroads into those departments to mine what information they had. Most times they were happy to see an outside researcher who was willing to spend his vacation time perusing old records.
We decided to include that chapter on records and research because we thought it would serve to encourage and inspire younger historians on their future quests into the history of whatever topic interested them. That will be a difficult road for sure because much of the information no longer will be available. At one time we were told that old B&O records no longer existed, destroyed by one of the many fires that plagued the B&O in their home city over the years. We found that was not always the case. Future history students probably won't have to worry as much about fire as they will about corporate policies on record retention and the use of electronic media to store records.
