Viewed in any of its aspects the territory served by the Missouri Pacific Lines for more than a century is an impressive and fascinating section of America. It is vast in area, bounded by the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers, the Colorado Rockies, Gulf of Mexico and the Rio Grande. Within these borders are both variety and abundance of scenic beauty and a substantial portion of our nation's agricultural, mineral and industrial wealth.
Men and women of many races and nations - and with as many motives - have participated in the discovery, exploration and settlement of this Missouri Pacific empire. It has, as a natural consequence, been the setting for some of the most stirring and significant episodes in American history and these are reflected, time and again, in the stories behind the naming of its cities and towns.
The origins of the names of most of these communities that are served by Missouri Pacific Lines - at least all that could be developed through careful and exhaustive research-are presented in the following pages of this book. The information has been compiled and published in the belief that it would be interesting to those who live amid and share the present abundance, natural and man-made, of "The Empire That Missouri Pacific Serves."
