INTRODUCTION
Japan has a large and expanding network of interurban railways, subways, tramways, and other transport systems powered by electricity. These combine with Japan's natural beauty, history and culture to form an immensely attractive destination for persons interested in electric transport. While all these systems are well documented in Japanese magazines and books, little practical information for visitors has been published in any other language.
This booklet is designed to fill this gap, so that visitors unfamiliar with spoken and written Japanese can plan and find their way around Japan with relative ease, economy and convenience. It has been written by and for electric railway enthusiasts, but we hope others will also find it useful, such as transit professionals on study tours. This initial volume covers all lines in northern Japan and the Tregion, and a second volume, now in preparation, will include the central, west and south parts of the country, including the great interurban network connecting Toyohashi, Nagoya, Osaka, Ky, Kand beyond.
We have tried to be accurate and include as much information as space permitted, which unfortunately did not allow for complete fleet lists of all systems. Some of the information will become obsolete as new lines open, old ones close, schedules change, fares increase, and stations are renamed and relocated. We present a picture of the electric railway scene in 1983, with some notes about coming changes, but with the knowledge that our accuracy will deteriorate with time.
Co-authors Ralph Forty, Ray DeGroote and Wally Higgins, longtime observers of the Japanese traction scene with much practice in extracting information from Japanese sources, provided encouragement, research materials, suggestions, corrections, comments and reminiscences. Ralph Forty corrected and updated the tramway rosters from those appearing in "Modern Tramway" in 1977. Wally Higgins contributed major portions of the text, checked all of it for errors and field-checked much of the information. The tasks of compilation and preparation of the master copy--and therefore ultimate responsibility for errors and omissions--rests with the prime author, who will welcome corrections and suggestions at P.O. Box 3484, Los Angeles, CA 90028-3484, USA.
