One of the most colorful and neglected eras in American transportation history.this definite history of electric interurbans. Built with the idea of attracting short distance passenger traffic and light freight, the interurbans initially had moderate success, although they never earned a return that would have been considered adequate in other industries. They were often locally financed and promoted, and the industry suffered from both excessive optimism of many promoters and from failure to reach intended destinationsinterurbans were largely built in two great booms in the early 1900s14% of the total interurban trackage has survived by integration into the railroad network.
Part 1 describes the building and technology of the interurbans, their passenger and freight traffic, their regulations by public authorities, their financial history and their final decline and abandonment. Part 2 presents histories of the more than 300 companies that comprised the industry.
