This will make the purchasing much easier and cheaper. The cost becomes prohibitive if it becomes necessary to buy chisels, planes, saws, clamps, etc in order to make only one toy. I have therefore made all the toys in this book using the bare minimum of tools. A craftsman never begrudges the time spent sharpening his tools and only beginners attempt to work with blunt tools and make everything much harder for themselves. It is certainly better to be competent with one tool than incompetent with a complete workshop, so I have chosen the fretsaw (or jigsaw, as it is known in America) as the only tool which needs to be mastered for these toys. It is the ideal tool to begin working with as it is quiet, clean and can be used on the kitchen table. It is also fairly inexpensive to buy and never needs sharpening because the blades are thrown away when blunt. Another advantage is that using the fretsaw (jigsaw) does not require great strength which makes this an excellent tool for any beginner whether man, woman or child, or even partially disabled.
