The first steam trams ran in 1879 and within nineteen years the city had the largest steam tram network in the world. But, by that time, electric trams were being introduced and they were to eventually replace all the steam-and cable-services in Sydney. The introduction of electric cars brought about another massive surge in patronage; between 1900 and 1914 there was an annual average increase in passenger numbers of 12 percent, from 58 million in 1900 to 285 million in 1914. They were not a success. The first was the Pitt Street line built to connect the ferries and ships using Circular Quay with the old railway station at Redfern. It was also intended that the tracks be used by goods traffic in the form of railway trucks. The various plans for new railways to suburbs were put aside and the Parliament authorised the construction of a tramway as a temporary measure. So short was the time available that rails had to be rolled locally rather than imported. On the 16 September 1879-the day before the exhibition opened-regular steam tramway services began between Redfern Station and Hunter Street along Elizabeth Street.
