About the author

The E-57B
The E-57B, preserved at Harlowton, Montana is the last surviving electric locomotive to work on the Milwaukee Road. It worked until 11:40 p.m. June 15, 1974 in the Harlowton yard.
The E-82 steeple cab switch engine worked in the Deer Lodge, Montana yard until 3 a.m. June 16, 1974 in order to claim the title as being the last electric locomotive. They wouldn't tie up until they knew the ES7B had been tied up. Their record was a hollow one because the E-82 went to scrap right away. The ES7B is now the undisputed last electric locomotive that worked on the Milwaukee.
The ES7B is one of 3 locomotives saved out of the original order of 84 locomotives built by General Electric Company and delivered to the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway between September 25, 1915 and March 18, 1917.
The other two locomotives saved are the E50 A & B. They were the original two units delivered on September 25, 1915 as the 10200 A & B. They are at the Lake Superior Transportation Museum in Duluth. Minnesota These are the only complete units in existence. They could move under their own power at any time as little as 230 volts of direct current was sent to a traction motor. The designed voltage is 3000 volts direct current. It was increased to 3400 volts in 1955.
