Preface and Acknowledgments
Several years ago I had the good fortune to visit the Ffestiniog Railway in Wales and talked with Peter Jordan of the Ffestiniog Railway Preservation Society. Peter has visited here and made the trip to Silverton several times. He encouraged me to put together a traveler's guide for the D&SNG. One that would be "reader friendly" and make the spectacular trip to Silverton more meaningful not only to train buffs, but to those who want to know more about the history, geography and natural life of the magnificent Animas Canyon.
The "Traveler's Guide" is the result. It is my hope that it meets the criteria set forth above. With the maps and a wide selection of vintage and current color illustrations, it helps the rider anticipate the many outstanding historic and scenic landmarks that abound along the way. The "Guide" also attempts to anticipate the many questions that are asked of the train crews on every trip. I hope that it will enable you to get the most out of this unique trip.
As with any publication of this nature it requires the time and expertise of many individuals.
