Introduction
The Chicago, Milwaukee St. Paul, and Pacific Railroad Company had its beginning with the 1847 incorporation of the
Milwaukee and Waukesha Railroad Company. After a shaky financial start, the line laid its first rails on September 12, 1850, and the road from Milwaukee to Waukesha was completed early the next year. Formal operation of Wisconsin's first railroad began on February 25, 1851, with a celebration that would be repeated by countless towns across the wide expanse of the future domain of the Milwaukee Road.
