INTRODUCTION
"One day you wake up and you're eighty years old." My dad - a 40-year Northern Pacific Railway veteran - said to me recently.
His point - if not readily obvious - is that time passes; its contents forever lost to eternity. Not to fear! Ruth Eckes has again risen to the occasion and has done something about this thief in the night by capturing precious railroad memories from the railroaders who lived each moment in her latest anthology, DOWN THE TRACK.
If one really stops and thinks about railroading and its time transcending `mythos,' one quickly realizes that these vignettes are crucial to preserving the legacy of the greatest success story of all: the American railroad system and its millions of dedicated employees! Because day-to-day, railroading was (and still is) about people, not steam engines, train orders or boxcars. Engineers notched the throttles on F9s. Telegraphers pounded brass in relay offices 24 hours a day. Dispatchers issued form 19s and train crews fulfilled those good `meets' at Wymer and Kanaskat at 3:00 in the morning in blinding snowstorms.
