I. Map of the Isle of Man showing the railways.
INTRODUCTION:
The Isle of Man is set in the midst of the Irish Sea, and on a clear day it can be seen from parts of England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. It occupies an area of 227 square miles.
The landscape in the northern part of the island is dominated by some high mountains, the summit of Snaefell at 2,036ft above sea level being the highest point. To the south, although not quite as extensive, is an equally impressive range of mountains, with the tallest, South Barrule, standing 1,586ft above sea level. Between the Northern and Southern Upland Massifs is the narrow Central Valley.
The capital and principal port of the island, Douglas, is on the east coast, where the combined rivers Dhoo and Glass flow into the Irish Sea. From the outskirts of the town the railway utilised the floor of the Central Valley, first keeping close to the winding contours of the River Dhoo, and from just beyond Crosby those of the River Greeba (a tributary of the Dhoo). Near Ballacurry crossing, almost seven miles from Douglas,
the summit of the line was reached at a mere 185ft above sea level. After the watershed the railway descended towards St John's, and then by threading the valley of the River Neb on to Peel, the main fishing port on the west coast.
Except for a short section at Peel, which rested on a sandstone base, the railway was laid entirely on an underlying bed of Manx slate.
