An illustrated account of the growth, running, and gradual reduction of Dorset's railways has long been needed, for no book on the subject has been published since 1968. Its author was J.H. Lucking, and no one could be better qualified to bring Dorset's railway history up to date. It began in 1826 with the opening of a primitive gravity-operated wagon-way on Portland. The first proper railway in the county was the Southampton & Dorchester, nicknamed 'Castleman's Corkscrew', and opened in 1847. Others gradually followed, amongst them the still affectionately remembered Somerset & Dorset Railway, and the line to Swanage through the foot-hills of the Purbecks. If the branch lines gave Dorset's railways their character, it was main line services like the Pines Express and the Great Western's boat trains to Weymouth that carried the bulk of the traffic. Apart from short extensions to military camps, the last railway to be opened in the county joined Lyme Regis to the network in 1903. Until the 1950s there were some 160 miles of railway in Dorset and more than 60 stations and halts..
