DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
When Elaine Shepard went to Vietnam for the Mutual Broadcasting System and the North American Newspaper Alliance she quickly decided that no one reporter could ever hope to cover all that widely scattered action. So instead, she decided to concentrate on the men who were fighting there, in particular the fliers ranging from those who manned the big choppers or the huge bombers to the fighter pilots and, the unsung heroes of the war, the daring men who flew the tiny FAC spotter planes. But especially she frequented those who winged up over the North at night, the only fliers entitled to wear the DOOM PUSSY patch, featuring an evil-looking feline with a black patch over one eye, greedily devouring one of our planes.
The legend around this animal, translated literally from the Vietnamese, reads: "I have flown into the jaws of the cat of death." Our guys are more likely to say, "I have seen the DOOM PUSSY."
Miss Shepard knows these men; she speaks their language. She flew with them, shared their rations and their gripes, listened to their ribald yarns, kept her mouth closed and her ears open. War is never a funny business but the humor that soldiers develop under stress can be brutal, bawdy, and excruciatingly comical. And it is this that Miss Shepard has superbly captured on paper.
There have been numerous books about Vietnam: doubtless there will be countless others. But none of them, we feel, will be quite like The DOOM PUSSY. For here is a unique narrative time sequences have often been varied, actual events sometimes appear out of their proper sequence or are telescoped for dramatic effect and readabilitythat is brisk, brassy, informative, and, though sometimes saucy, ever to the point. Miss Shepard thinks we have every right to be in Vietnam and makes no bones about saying why she thinks so. Admittedly a hawk, she tends to be objective enough so that the doves are apt to accuse her of being a hawk and the hawks often feel she is an out-and-out dove.
But be that as it may, Elaine Shepard is an uncommonly capable and colorful reporter and a lady who has made it a habit to be where she wasn't supposed to be at precisely the right time. She was the first newspaper woman into the Congo battle area in 1960 and the only woman among 83 men reporters to accompany President Eisenhower on his 22,370-mile trip to 11 countries in 1959.
Miss Shepard is also the author of Forgive Us Our Press Passes, a disarmingly lighthearted yet revealing book about a reporter's experiences behind the scenes, where the news is being made.
