DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
DOODLEBUG COUNTRY! As the roaming of the sputtering rail motorcar along the lonely branch line recedes further into our railroading past, the brighter in retrospect is its image in the mind's eye.
Doodlebug Country was any mainline or branch line in the U.S. which supported the train-in-one-car with its few passengers, their baggage, perhaps some mail, express and even LCL freight. Early railroad managements viewed the doodlebug not romantically but simply as a way to save money.
Therefore, the rail motorcar prolonged passenger service for up to several decades on marginal lines which otherwise would have become "freight only." But now it too is gone, along with some of the very tracks it once trod.
In this work, which we proudly offer to you as Interurbans Special 77, author Ed Keilty surveys all of the U.S. Class 1 railroads, tracing their use of self-propelled cars and exhaustively listing the equipment operated. It's all here - from the Alaska RR to Wheeling & Lake Erie, and from American Car & Foundry to Westinghouse-with complete photo coverage.
Author Keilty's first book in this series, Interurbans Without Wires, surveyed all major and most minor U.S. railcar builders, and is now a standard reference in most transportation libraries. This book, we expect, will take its place alongside the first as an authority on its chosen subject.
Through merger and abandonment many of the railroad names appearing in these pages have disappeared, as have nearly all of the doodlebugs. Sad it is that with rare exceptions the towns which were once the ports of call for the doodlebug now must depend solely on the automobile and truck.
The coverage of this volume includes statistics on the Budd RDC car, which will be the subject of a future book in this series. You will also find featured herein some of the very early streamliners of the 1930s, since genetically they sprang to a remarkable degree from the genus Doodlebug.
