Welcome to Lilliput-the world of dollhouses and dollhouse miniatures! If you've never been here before, you'll be amazed to discover that here is a world as large as it is small. If you're a frequent visitor, you're already aware of its fascinations.
What is it about miniatures that lures so many? No doubt there are many explanations. The world of miniatures permits total indulgence of our imaginations, tastes, and even our dreams. It is a world that is highly detailed and precise, but which also encompasses many interests and abilities. Whatever your craft enthusiasm happens to be, chances are you can do it on a small scale. And many projects which seem "too big" to undertake in the full scale world become entirely feasible in the world of miniatures.
As a general craft magazine, Creative Crafts has always included miniatures among the subjects it covers. Two of the first articles we published on the craft were "Dollhouse Furniture" by Louise Prewitt, included in this -volume. At that time we naively believed that people made dollhouse furniture primarily as children's playthings. It soon became apparent, however, that most dollhouse furniture is made not for children but as models to be collected and displayed in a miniature room or house. We learned about the importance of scale in miniaturization, and that there were thousands of hobbyists actively engaged in the creation of perfectly scaled homes, furnishings, and accessories. In fact, miniatures are regarded as the third largest hobby in the United States, and they're still growing.
As our own understanding of the hobby and our awareness of its popularity increased, so did the number of articles about it that appeared in Creative Crafts. Our June 1973 issue was devoted exclusively to dollhouse miniatures and other miniature crafts. This issue was soon sold out, although we still receive frequent requests for it and for other issues, also no longer available, containing articles about miniatures. Those requests, along with many letters from readers asking for more about miniatures, inspired this book, comprised of all the articles published about dollhouses and dollhouse miniatures from Fall of 1968 to August 1974. We hope that it will serve as a useful and enjoyable guide to the land of Lilliput.
