Until 1871 only a few trappers, anglers, hunters and lumbermen had penetrated the rusticity of the central Adirondack Mountains of northern New York. In that year a new era began with the completion of Dr. Thomas Clark Durant's Adirondack Railroad from Saratoga to North Creek.
Dr. Durant ( 1820-1885 ) was the first of several members of the family to take a leading part in the development of the region. Among the others were his son, William West Durant (1850-1934) , and two nephews, Charles W. Durant, Jr., (1849-1928) and Frederick C. Durant (1853-1926) . The name was of Italian origin ( the name of the poet Dante was an abbreviation of Durante) . The family's ancestors had, however, emigrated to England some time during the Middle Ages. The American branch was descended from a Richard Durant, twice mayor of Bodmin, Cornwall, who died there in 1632. The latter's grandson, William, born in Malden, Massachusetts, in 1661, was the first native American of the family. Several of his descendants in that state became well known during Colonial and Revolutionary times.
Dr. Thomas Clark Durant was born in Lee, Massachusetts. He was graduated from the Albany Medical College in 1840. After practicing surgery for a few years, he abandoned his profession for a partnership in the Albany firm of Durant, Lathrop and Company, exporters of flour and grain. He opened a New York office for the firm and acquired a reputation as a successful speculator on the exchanges. In 1847 he married Heloise Hannah Timbrel of England. A daughter, Heloise, and a son, William West Durant, were born to the couple.
Railroad developments in the Midwest attracted Dr. Durant's attention in 1851. He played a prominent part in the organizing and building of the Michigan, Southern, Chicago and Rock Island and the Mississippi and Missouri railroads. In 1861 he became interested in the project for a transcontinental line. He emerged as the leading figure in the construction of the Union Pacific Railroad. The line was chartered by Congress in 1862 and the first track was laid in 1865 from Council Bluffs, Iowa - across the Missouri River from Omaha - as the eastern starting point.
