Among the "classic" American railroad companies that predated the modern merger movement, the Louisville & Nashville Railroad was one of the more prodigious financial performers. The L&N was chartered in 1850, and despite the limited geographic reach implied by its name, the system ultimately stretched from Chicago to the Gulf of Mexico, with major lines extending throughout most of the central South. This all-color pictorial of the L&N brings together the exceptional photographic work of 55 individual photographers in more than 200 stunning images. The text and captions help explain how the L&N operated during its final three decades of existence. The company's frugality sometimes was reflected in uninspired locomotive liveries, but the memorable and more colorful gray and yellow paint schemes are well represented in this volume.
This volume is broken into chapters by division, as they existed in 1976. A diverse selection of mainline fast freights, passenger trains, locals, branchline runs, yard movements, and - of course - plenty of coal trains and mine runs, provides a comprehensive portrait of the L&N during this era. Photos were selected for their visual appeal and with an eye to portraying the L&N system as it looked in its various subregions. The "Old Reliable," as the company was known prior to 1957, was many things to many people - an Appalachian coal originator, a Midwestern grain line, a fast freight bridge route, or a near sea-level line along the scenic Gulf Coast. These many personalities are captured by this book's images. The book's title reflects the more comprehensive nickname the L&N inherited from its long-time affiliate, the Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis, the "Dixie Line." After the L&N-NC&StL merger in 1957, and through later mergers and acquisitions, the L&N truly became a system of "Dixie Lines."
While other books have covered segments of the L&N system, its motive power, rolling stock and passenger trains, this volume was intended to bring all these elements together in a single work to give the reader a true flavor of this extraordinary railroad. Although the L&N disappeared after 1982 as part of CSX Corporation, most of the trackage depicted in this book was still in service at the time of publication. The name and colors may have changed, but those same "Dixie Lines" are still vital corridors of commerce that carry on the proud tradition of the Louisville & Nashville Railroad.
