Discovering Railways By G R Halson Dust Jacket 1964 2nd impression, 128 pages Indexed.
There are many line drawings and photographs, a set of helpful diagrams of rolling stock and locomotives and a list of books and magazines and an index. What are the duties of key railwaymen, railway history, construction of routes, operational problems, more.
WE are now at a turning point in railway history, the time of the change-over from steam to electric and diesel power. The real appeal of railways, for boys and men alike, came from the great steam locomotives, the Pacifies and the Black Staniers, the iron monsters which could shake the ground as they roared past and could deafen the ears with their noise. But soon these will be things of the past, and will become museum pieces, for railways everywhere are being modernised.
Railways have a fascination for young and old. Little boys collect engine numbers, grown men club together to ride in special trains on closed branch-lines, and even some of the universities have Railway Societies composed of enthusiasts and experts in some aspect of railway science. So, whatever your interest in railways is-railway history, a technical knowledge of engine construction, or curiosity as to what makes railways "tick"-you will find that the more you know, the more interesting it becomes.
And that is where this book will be useful to you. If you want to know what a journey on a night express is like, read Chapter III, or Chapter IV for all the work done on a busy station during the night. The work of key railwaymen, drivers, guards, signalmen and gangers, is vividly described in other chapters of Part I.
If you are interested in railway history, you will find it in the first two chapters in both Part I and Part II, and there are some good stories of the early days.
If you are interested in how railway routes were planned, and want to know about the difficulties the engineers had to overcome in building the lines; if, when you arc on a railway journey, you want to know what to look out for, to help you understand why the track was built just at that point, or why the engine driver alters his speed, you will find it all explained in the Reference Section (Part II).
You can find out how railway tracks are maintained, how your safety is ensured, and a great deal about goods trains and how they are worked.
There are fascinating timetable quizzes, suggestions for things you can find out from maps and timetables, a very helpful list of books and magazines on railways, and a useful index.
