But they wore themselves out in so doing. It was obvious after the war that private finance could never fully restore, let alone impove, the railway system, and so nationalisation was inevitable. The 1947 Act did not, strangely enough, integrate the railways in a national transport system but continued to segregate them as they were when privately owned, and laid upon them the burden of paying 3 per cent per annum on the new Transport stock. Nevertheless BR made a profit from 1948 to 1954 inclusive.
