PREFACE
In 1939 our railways had reached the peak of efficiency for steam and because of this they were able to help Britain win the war far more than the roads. But they wore themselves out in so doing. It was obvious after the war that private finance could never fully restore, let alone impove, the railway system, and so nationalisation was inevitable. The 1947 Act did not, strangely enough, integrate the railways in a national transport system but continued to segregate them as they were when privately owned, and laid upon them the burden of paying 3 per cent per annum on the new Transport stock. Nevertheless BR made a profit from 1948 to 1954 inclusive. Space does not permit an examination of the causes of the gradual loss of 'profitability' but the remedy of closing hundreds of branch lines was quite unsound.
The purpose of this book is to describe certain interesting routes of former railway lines, hut it in no way implies that access may be had to these routes as a matter of right. Before entering on to any such premises which are not clearly designated as a public footway, members of the public should inquire as to what, if any, permission is required and obtain the necessary consent.
For this fourth edition, I have revisited most of the railways and amended the text. As a general rule, where the old track bed is on an embankment or at ground level walking is still practicable. In cuttings, however, the accumulation of rain water has encouraged trees, bushes and weeds.
It only remains for me to acknowledge the great help I received in writing this book. In the course of discovering lost railways one must unfortunately travel many miles by car and I could never have found my way across country to reach the deserted stations without the skilful map-reading of Frances, my wife. I owe much to my friends John .I. Davis and C. W. Collard for their invaluable help with the photographs, and last, but certainly not least, I must express my appreciation for the assistance I have had from the staff at the Public Record Office, always so cheerfully given.
