Preface
Nearly five decades ago, there was a knock on my front door and a young Gene Dauner was introduced as being interested in the old Catskill Mountain Branch of the New York Central. He had an album of photographs in hand that he had recently taken and they were quite impressive. I took him on a brief tour through my collection and since that day we have been fast friends.
One of the most noted New York Central photographers and historians of our time, the late Edward L. May, told me that Gene had a natural talent for railroad photography and said he would become one of the best. He was so right!
In the mid 1960s, Gene began taking some color slides of The Catskill Mountain Branch (formerly the Ulster 86 Delaware) and each time he showed me new ones, I became more impressed. Over the years he has become a premiere color photographer of the regions railroads and has had his work published in several different books and magazines.
I also managed to take a few color photographs of the line in the late 1950s and early 1960s. After that, my employment in the lumber industry did not afford me the opportunity to photograph the last years of the old U & D.
We have not found any color images of the early diesel trains that ran on the Branch, so a few photographs of the "first of the breed" appear in black and white in the front section of this publication.
When Gene suggested that it might be of interest to publish some of his Catskill Mountain rail and associated color scenes, I jumped at the opportunity to preserve his wonderful color slides of the final years on the Catskill Mountain Branch.
It is my pleasure to present his best color images within the covers of this new edition and I hope that his photographs, along with a few color and black and white images taken by others, bring the reader as much enjoyment and fond memories of the old railroad as they have to me.
