The Southern Pacific, with its more than twenty-one thousand miles of trackage, once was the proud owner of the largest fleet of Alco passenger locomotives ever to be assembled on any railroad's roster anywhere in the world. Southern Pacific was not first to operate PA's - that honor went to the Santa Fe - nor was it the last for as this book is published ex-Santa Fe units are still at work for the Delaware and Hudson Railway and a few more examples can be found overseas.
It was left to the Southern Pacific's Daylight-painted fleet, and the Santa Fe's in Warbonnet colors, to first gain fame for the big single-engined units, however; and they accomplished this with uncanny ease on a grander scale than could have ever been imagined as the Passenger Alco was first created on the builder's drawing boards. When the PA's were born railroad advertising departments were quick to secure a set of publicity views with polished new locomotives, and for the Alcos
it should be noted that they were born on the road to fame.
Glory, however, is short lived; and though they boasted the world's largest Passenger Alco fleet, from start to finish the PA era on Southern Pacific was only a brief nineteen years. New diesels delivered earlier lasted on the railroad longer, but none achieved the popularity of the train watcher on an equal basis.
From the full-color Shasta Daylight dust jacket painting to the details of a 1956 upgrading program and finally the scrapping which ended an all-too-short career for the long-nosed Alcos, this book thoroughly covers the Southern Pacific PA unit fleet. High-quality photographs by some of the finest rail photographers in the West depict these passenger locomotives from their 1948 arrival to the end of service nineteen years later in 1967.
Whether it is hurrying up the San Francisco Peninsula on a commute run, threading their way up and over the Tehachapis, the Cascades, across the state of Texas or in charge of one of the system's colorful Overland Route trains, this is the Southern Pacific's PA story.
Two thousand horsepower out of a single post-war prime mover, frequently with a more than ample cloud of black smoke climbing skyward upon the acceleration from a stop, the Alco PA captured the fondness of most train watchers everywhere. This book is a study of their Southern Pacific life, the first in a new book series of detailed pictorials of the Espee diesel fleet.
