Timetable of Events in the Evolution of the Diesel-Electric Locomotive 160
The Diesel Years actually began back in the decade following World War I-when General Electric, Ingersoll-Rand, the American Locomotive Company, and the Baldwin Locomotive Works were experimenting with the diesel engine as a means of railroad motive power. This was a time when the Electro-Motive Corporation was founded to sell the railroad industry gas-electric rail motor cars in order to reduce the operating cost of branch line passenger service.
While the diesel underwent research and development, the steam locomotive remained "King of the Rails." Before long the diesel came rolling down the track-slowly at first, then rushed in during the streamline era of the early 1930's. By mid-decade the avalanche toward full dieselization of America's railroads was on. By the early 1940's the diesel had won its victory, and only World War II kept steam alive.
In the three decades since the end of the war, the nation's railroads have undergone what has been perhaps the most exciting motive power change in almost a century and a half of railroading, changes in technology so fundamental that it is difficult to avoid the use of the word "revolutionary."
The new diesel locomotives came in many colors and in many shapes, as Alco, Baldwin, Electro-Motive, Fairbanks-Morse, and General Electric battled for the market. By 1970, only the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors and General Electric remained as builders of America's diesel locomotives.
The Diesel Years then, is a photographic album of the revolutionary change in motive power, presenting some important diesel locomotive types, and some obscure ones too-all chosen to portray the machine that has dominated the railroad scene for the past quarter century.
Come to trackside, and watch as EMD's wind up on the Kansas Cityan, as Alco PA's charge through Illinois during a storm, as FM's drum down the Connecticut River valley, as "Sharknoses" from Baldwin labor for the New York Central, and as General Electric's big double engined U50's race west toward the setting sun on the Union Pacific. This book is your passport to The Diesel Years.
