When the 103 eased through the gates of her La Grange ( Ill.) birthplace in November 1939, diesel-electric road freight motive power was only a theory, and by her builder's own admission this dark green, yellow- striped locomotive was an experiment. Eleven months and 83,764 miles later steam's century-old grip on the freight train had been permanently broken and No. 103 was the prototype for the world's first standardized, mass-produced line of diesel freight locomotives.
