The Story of the 83,764-mile test that doomed steam.
1 SUPPOSE you were asked this question: What single locomotive constructed since 1900 has had the greatest impact upon U. S. railroading? Surely your answer would have to be Electro-Motive No. 103, the 193- foot, 900,000-pound, 5400-horsepower machine spread across these pages. When the 103 eased through the gates of her La Grange ( Ill.) birthplace in November 1939, diesel-electric road freight motive power was only a theory, and by her builder's own admission this dark green, yellow- striped locomotive was an experiment. Eleven months and 83,764 miles later steam's century-old grip on the freight train had been permanently broken and No. 103 was the prototype for the world's first standardized, mass-produced line of diesel freight locomotives. There is no equal in the annals of railroading for such a swift closing of the gap between fancy and fact.
