On a locomotive roster of more than 1,400 units, Union Pacific's fleet of 26 EMD GP35s was often overlooked in the 1960s by trackside observers. Purchased as cab units for double-engined DD35 sets, they were soon displaced by DD35As equipped with cabs and growing hordes of SD40/SD40-2s.

While not new to the diesel era, railroads commonly assigned their older, less-dependable locomotives to lower-priority assignments such as work-train service. While renumbering was common, repainting was not. But CSX Transportation did both, painting them bright orange and assigning them new 9500-9700 series numbers.
