For KCS, the introduction of EMD SD40Xs and later, SD50s, was the next step in the continuing evolution of the six-axle road switcher for use on the rolling profile of the carrier's north-south main line. More horsepower and better traction control systems were at the heart of these two models.

time, B&O turned to EMD to take in its worn-out and obsolete units, turning them into modern locomotives. First with E units, and later with FTs and F3s, in 1967
it turned F7s into new GP38s with the financial backing of B&O's new owner, C&0.
