8 EMD's Versatile GP9 - Part 41

19 Illinois Central EMD SD70s
After shrinking down to a Chicago-New Orleans core, IC began to upgrade its locomotive fleet with secondhand SD40-2s. The exit of leased GP38s and GP38ACs left the carrier with a locomotive shortage. The result was the acquisition of new EMD SD70s; the first new locomotives for the carrier in 20 years.
32 EMD's SD70ACe Tier 4 Debut
Faced with meeting the EPA's Tier 4 emissions regulations, EMD abandoned its two-cycle prime mover, used in locomotives since 1938, in favor of a new four-cycle V-12. To house the prime mover, the builder modified its SD7OACe, renamed it the SD7OACe-T4, and introduced it to the North American railroad market in 2015.
42 Canadian National SW1200RS - Part 1
While builder's were promoting models for mainline dieselization, CN was looking for a lighter, less horsepower roadswitcher model to work the numerous light-rail branchlines operated by the carrier. Modifications made the SW1200 a suitable candidate, resulting in 192 examples that worked on CN lines from the Atlantic to the Pacific into the 21st century.
