22 GE's Tier 4 Evolution Series
Rolling on the rails today are hundreds of General Electric ET44AC and ET44C4 locomotives that look similar to previous members of the Evolution Series but incorporate some important changes. These changes are a direct result of needing to meet the EPA's Tier 4 emissions regulations.

For Chicago & North Western, the lack of funds resulted in the use of Alco models long after they had been retired by other carriers. To maximize their
usefulness, they were concentrated on branch lines in Minnesota and South Dakota, where they treaded on poorly maintained lines with lightweight rail.

For the L&N, the GP30 ushered in the carrier's first second-generation locomotive model as well as a bright new look. The original fleet of 58 units grew to 71 with the addition of secondhand units from Chicago & Eastern Illinois, Atlantic Coast Line, and Seaboard Air Line.
