For those of us who saw the advent of Amtrak, the streamlined E unit was a common sight on a majority of passenger trains we photographed. In the sixth part of this story, we look at the E9s numbered in the 425-435 series, as well as rebuilt E8s numbered
in the 436-449 series.

46 Santa Fe's SF30C Program
While rebuilding efforts on General Electric locomotives have been generally limited, one of the first such major programs involved Santa Fe's U36C fleet delivered between 1972 and 1975. In 1985 and 1986, the carrier rebuilt 70 of the units to its SF30C
specification at its Cleburne, Texas, shop, adding more than 10 years to their service life
