What to do with 25-year-old locomotives that have fairly modern control and electrical equipment, but a less-than-reliable prime mover? You rebuild them at your state-of-the-art shop into 3,000-horsepower units with modern computerized traction controls.
18 EMD's Versatile GP9 - Part 1
At the start of 1954, America's railroads were well into the conversion of steam power to diesel-electric power, but 11,787 steam locomotives remained on U.S. railroad rosters. Already the nation's largest diesel locomotive builder, the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors, introduced a refinement of its Seven-series locomotive models, the Nine series. Replacing the wildly popular four-axle road-switcher model, the GP7, was the GP9. Over the next five years, the builder would assemble some 4,272 GP9 units or a variation of the base model. In Diesel Era's largest undertaking to date, we will take a look at each
of the original buyers of the GP9. This issue covers the Santa Fe's and Baltimore & Ohio's fleets.
