Dieselizing later than U.S. railroads, Canadian National Railway amassed a fleet of 348 GMD-built GP9s between 1956 and the end of 1959. After high-
horsepower second-generation diesels bumped these Geeps from the main line, they continued to enjoy an extended career, the result of a major
remanufacturing program the carrier began in the early 1980s.
