For CP, the acquisition of General Motors' GP35 model in the early 1960s marked the final high-horsepower four-axle road-switcher design the carrier placed into service on its transcontinental railroad. Soon, SD40/SD40-2s became the mainstay of this Canadian carrier's fleet.

Like most "union station" railroads, IU toiled away in the shadow of its joint owners, and like many, it disappeared as mergers and consolidations eliminated the need for complex operating agreements among a multitude of owners.
But for nearly 30 years, IU operated a utilitarian group of locomotives -first, high-hooded FMs, and later, plain-vanilla SW1500s.
