6Diesel Oddballs, or "Non-Locomotive Locomotives" Clifford J. Downey
Locomotives are expensive, so railroads naturally try to maximize the life of each unit, and the have discovered many creative ways to reuse worn-out locomotives. From slugs, steam generator cars, engine transport cars, rotary snowplow power cars, and push-pull cab control cars, to radio control cars, many units have found new careers after retirement.
25 The 20-Cylinder Standard - SP and the SD45 Robert H. Reed
Just as F units and GP9s had once dominated the Southern Pacific roster of the 1950s, in the late 1960s, a new locomotive from EMD came to rule the SP and Cotton Belt main line, the 3,600-horsepower SD45. Between 1966 and 1970, the 20-cylinder monsters were rolling onto the property on an almost daily basis, moving record tonnages at speed.

43 EMC's Early Passenger Diesels - Part 1 Diesel Era staff
