DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
A through route linking the Midlands and the North with the port of Southampton had been the dream of railway promoters since the early days of railway mania. It seemed the dream would at last be realized in 1873 with the establishment of the Didcot, Newbury and Southampton Junction Railway Company.
This history attempts to trace the story of that railway from those early years, taking the reader from the rain soaked field just outside Newbury in which Lady Carnarvon turned the first sod, through the bitter fight for a direct link with Southampton, the endless arguments with the GWR and LSWR, its wartime heydays and ultimately on to its decline and closure.
As a worked railway the DN & S is less fashionable than many similar lines. It will be remembered by most as a sleepy country branch, but its quiet, unassuming little stations nestle beside a railway that was conceived as a main line and owned by a fiercely independent company. Yet it contains elements that combine together to provide a fascinating insight into railway construction and working, intercompany rivalry and the effects of road competition, and as its unhappy history unfolds, it throws into relief many of the factors that were later to contribute towards the malaise of British Railways.
It is not the story of a main line or a branch line, it is above all a story of hope and frustrated ambition.
The authors have spent many years assembling the material contained in this volume. It is the culmination of much painstaking research involving extensive and detailed study of archives as well as interviews with many of the staff who worked on the line.
This should not be read merely as a railway history but should be looked upon as a means by which the reader may share the experience of those who built the line and those who worked on it.
