In recalling his railway career, Bernard Barlow has provided us all with a valuable insight into the life and work of a railway fireman based at Didcot engine shed during the 1940s and 50s. He started with the GWR as a lad porter at Oxford, transferring to the Loco Department in 1938 when he went to Old Oak Common as a cleaner. His father was a senior fireman at Didcot and Bernard also transferred there the following year, just before the outbreak of war. Apart from a few weeks at Winchester, he spent his firing days and most of the rest of his career at Didcot, where he experienced the enormous influx of extra crews to cope with the workload brought about by the war and the associated problems of tool shortages, etc.
