This is the story of the horrific derailment of the Pennsylvania Railroad's premier passenger train between Washington, D.C. and New York City known as the Congressional Limited. This fast through train reached speeds up to eighty miles per hour. As passengers, both civilians and military men, were returning from a festive Labor Day weekend, the train derailed in Philadelphia in front of SHORE Tower (Frankford Junction). Although the train was only traveling fifty-six miles per hour, the seventh coach went airborne, going nearly vertical, before slamming into the reinforced A-frame of a home-signal bridge. The A-frame sliced through the coach, opening it "like a can of sardines," splitting the coach into two sections. Passengers were thrown through windows, some being decapitated in the process. The accident scene was one of total destruction, a scene out of a horror movie. In all, seventy-nine lives were lost and one hundred twenty-nine people were injured. Priests crawled through the mangled mess of steel, administering last rites. Rumors quickly spread that the disaster was caused by Axis sabotage. The Federal Bureau of Investigations seized vital pieces of evidence to conduct a thorough inquiry. This derailment became, and still is, the worst rail disaster in the history of the State of Pennsylvania and ranks within the top ten disasters on American rails.
