ON THE BACK COVER:
The "Red Heifer," a dull red, Brill-built motor car, combined passenger, express and railway post office features in one self-propelled unit. It was - according to the author - the best investment ever made by the Delaware & Northern Railroad, a line plagued throughout its life by more than its share of misfortune. The tragedies, small triumphs, and good humor that were all part of the D&N story are recounted here by Gertrude Fitch Horton, the daughter of one of its engineers. Over a hundred historic photographs and post cards help document the history of this railroad and the communities it served along the East Branch of the Delaware River.
