He is a regular contributor to Trains and Hainan magazines and other railroad publications, and is the author of The Rutland Road, published by Howell North Books in 1967. The American Association of State and Local History awarded Shaughnessy a Certificate of Merit for The Rutland Road. He has traveled through most of the 50 states. Canada. Mexico and 17 European countries. Thus his photographic collection has grown enormously. and so has the list of magazine articles he has authored and illustrated.  Shaughnessy knows and takes good pictures which give not only mechanical details of the trains, but also give consideration to the location and surroundings of a rail line. Night views are his special favorite and he goes to great lengths to make these views dramatic and memorable. His work has appeared in eight Lucius Beebe books I and he is known to be a generous contributor to other authors' works.   The Rutland has always particularly interested him because of its quaint country-type operation and its colorful equipment, for, as he believes. \"a train is a rural thing anyway.\"  He is a native of Troy. New York. graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, with a degree in Civil Engineering. and is a licensed professional engineer. He was an Associate Professor in Civil Technology at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, an engineer with the Rensselaer County Highway Department. and is now working with a consulting engineering firm involved in water supplies and waste disposal.
